สำหรับอุปกรณ์ที่เหมาะกับเครื่องสำรองไฟฟ้าได้แก่โรงงานที่มีระบบอัตโนมัติต่างๆเช่นหุ่นยนต์ โรงพยาบาลเช่นห้องไตเทียม ห้องผ่าตัด ห้องฉุกเฉิน ห้องไอซียู ห้องคลอด ห้องเด็กอ่อน  ศูนย์คอมพิวเตอร์ และอุปกรณ์อื่นๆที่ต้องการไฟฟ้าแบบต่อเนื่อง

เครื่องสํารองไฟสำหรับระบบจ่ายไฟในโรงพยาบาลและสถานประกอบการขนาดใหญ่ เนื่องจากระบบไฟฟ้าในเมืองไทยยังไม่ค่อยมีเสถียรภาพมากนัก ทั้งปัญหาจากไฟฟ้าตก ไฟฟ้าดับ ทำให้จำเป็นต้องใช้เครื่องสำรองไฟฟ้า เพื่อป้องกันความเสียหายแก่อุปกรณ์ไฟฟ้าจากปัญหาทางไฟฟ้าที่เกิดขึ้น ดังนั้น ในโรงพยาบาลและสถานประกอบการขนาดใหญ่จึงจำเป็นที่จะต้องมีระบบสำรองไฟไว้ใช้เมื่อยามจำเป็น  ถ้าพูดถึงระบบสำรองไฟก็จะมีอยู่ 2 ประเภท คือ เครื่องสำรองไฟ หรือที่เราคุ้นหูในชื่อ UPS และอีกประเภทหนึ่ง คือ เครื่องกำเนิดไฟฟ้า (Generator) หรือที่เราเรียกสั้นๆว่า Gen  ก่อนอื่น เรามาทำความรู้จัก UPS และ Gen กันก่อนดีกว่า UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) เป็นอุปกรณ์ที่ใช้เพื่อจ่ายไฟฟ้าสำรองจากแบตเตอรี่ให้กับอุปกรณ์ไฟฟ้าในระหว่างที่เกิดเหตุการณ์ไฟฟ้าดับ ซึ่งมักจะใช้สำรองไฟ เพื่อรอให้ Gen ทำงานจนสามารถจ่ายไฟให้กับระบบได้ก่อน โดยที่ UPS จะมีอยู่ 3 ประเภท คือ 

1. Off Line UPS  มีคุณสมบัติสำรองกระแสไฟฟ้า (ป้องกันไฟฟ้าดับ)ได้เพียงอย่างเดียว

2. Line Interactive UPS with Stabilizer  มีคุณสมบัติสำรองกระแสไฟฟ้า (ป้องกันไฟฟ้าดับ) และควบคุมแรงดันกระแสไฟฟ้า ในกรณีที่เกิดปัญหาไฟฟ้าดับ ไฟฟ้าตก พัฒนามาจากแบบแรก นิยมใช้งานมากที่สุดในปัจจุบัน

3. On Line UPS  มีคุณสมบัติสำรองกระแสไฟฟ้า (ป้องกันไฟฟ้าดับ) ควบคุมแรงดันกระแสไฟฟ้าในกรณีที่เกิด ปัญหาไฟฟ้าตก ไฟฟ้าเกิน ถือว่าเป็น UPS ที่มีคุณภาพสูงกว่าชนิดอื่น มีการจ่ายกระแสไฟตลอดเวลา มีความเชื่อถือได้สูง ป้องกันสัญญาณรบกวนต่าง ๆ มีการออกแบบป้องกันการโหลดอย่างสมบูรณ์ มีราคาสูงกว่าแบบอื่นๆ

เครื่องสำรองไฟฟ้า แบบ Line Interactive UPS มีชื่อเรียกเป็นทางการว่า VI (Voltage Independent) คือ เครื่องสำรองไฟฟ้าประเภทหนึ่ง ซึ่งมีหลักการทำงานโดยในสภาวะปกติ โหลดจะใช้พลังงานไฟฟ้าจากแหล่งจ่ายไฟฟ้าหลัก และมีการป้องกันแรงดันไฟฟ้าตก (Under voltage) แรงดันไฟฟ้าเกิน (Over Voltage) ด้วยฟังก์ชั่นพิเศษคือ AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) หรือเครื่องรักษาระดับแรงดันไฟฟ้า voltage stabilizer เมื่อระบบไฟฟ้าดับ ตัวโหลดก็จะใช้ไฟฟ้าที่ได้จากเครื่องแหล่งจ่ายไฟฟ้าสำรอง (UPS) ซึ่งผลิดไฟฟ้าจากแบตเตอรี่ Battery โดยไม่เกิดการขัดจังหวะ
